How We Can Help Hurricane Harvey Victims

Hi everyone! It's Kayla, and today my mom is speaking out about serving the people of South Texas. (This article was previously posted on the women's Bible study site she's a part of: Whispers and Fringes.) It's so hard to see the devastation in Houston and Louisiana, especially since both Jayla and I have family in Houston. Keep everyone in your prayers and if you can, please donate to a charity that will reach out to these people in need.

The devastation Hurricane Harvey has caused in South Texas has been quite alarming. Seeing the photos of the damage and hearing from friends and family who have been displaced from their homes has left many of our hearts heavy. The reality is that when a natural disaster strikes, those of us who are not directly impacted may feel helpless and not know what to do.

“Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.” (1 John 3:18 NLT) As the hands and feet of Christ, we can assist these victims in several different ways:

DONATE- Organizations such as the American Red Cross and Salvation Army are trained to respond to disasters such as Harvey.

RED CROSS: You can donate here. You can also text the word HARVEY to 90999 to donate $10. In addition, the organization is asking for volunteers.

To donate to the SALVATION ARMY, click here.

SOUTH TEXAS BLOOD & TISSUE DONATION: You can donate here.

TEXAS DIAPER BANK: You can donate here.

HOUSTON SPCA: You can donate here. (SPCA is an animal shelter and is also taking in stray or displaced pets.)

CENTRAL TEXAS FOOD BANK: You can donate here.

SAN ANTONIO FOOD BANK: You can donate here. Many displaced Houston residents will be relocated to San Antonio.

COALITION FOR THE HOMELESS: An umbrella organization coordinating shelters and organizations across Houston. You can donate here.

DRISCOLL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL, which cares for Corpus Christi’s youngest and most ill patients, was directly in the path of Harvey. The hospital transported many of its patients out of harm’s way. Donations can be made online at www.driscollchildrens.org.

Covenant Church is partnering with Trusted World to provide volunteers to help sort donations, and supplies for the people taking refuge in Dallas.
