Talking to God

Have you ever prayed for something harder than you have ever prayed for something before?
One story that comes to mind is that of Amy Carmichael. When she was very young, the little brown-eyed girl prayed to God with all her might that he would give her blue eyes. However, she still had brown eyes. She didn’t understand why God hadn’t answered her prayers. It wasn’t until years later that she finally understood why God had given her brown eyes. She became a missionary to India and rescued little girls from becoming basically slaves in temples. In order to do this, she poured coffee on her skin and dressed like the Indians. With her brown eyes, she was able to blend in with the people. Could you imagine what it would have been like if God had given her blue eyes when she begged for them at a young age? She would not have been able to fulfill her calling on her life to rescue children in India. But notice something. Amy didn’t fully realize why she had brown eyes until years later. It must have been incredibly hard to not know why she couldn’t have what she prayed for right away.
We can see that there is a key element to prayer: patience. This is especially true when your prayers are not answered or they are not answered the way you would have hoped for. Many times, we will never be able to know the answers as to why our prayers weren’t answered until we get up to Heaven. In many instances, you will have to wait for some period of time to finally realize why your prayer wasn’t answered. This is when patience comes into play.
In this time in my life, I find myself praying for certain things that are still yet to come.
Please God, I really want to win the election in student council.
I really would like to have this classmate as my partner in this project.
Please heal my grandmother.
Help me to do well in my speech this week.
Please help my best friend and I to do an excellent job as we write songs together. Please help it to touch many people.
Please help me to write a book so it can inspire many people.
There are so many other things that I am praying for. These are just to name a few. For most of these things, I won’t get to know the answer to them until later in my life. Some of them, such as the first and fourth requests, I will be able to find out this week. But others, such as the second request, I won;t find out for another few weeks. The rest I won’t find out until much later.
I’m sure there is something in your life that you are praying for. Maybe it’s for a loved one to come to Christ, for you to pass a test, for you to find a friend. There are so many things we all pray for. We have to remember that God knows best. We really have to exercise our patience. Don’t give up faith if your prayer doesn’t seem like it’s answered. God has a plan! He only wants the best for us. Trust him today.
